The Eerie Ghost Town That Lies Beneath Mount Sinabung

In April this year, daredevil photographer Keow Wee Loong ventured to Sumatra Island, Indonesia, to document the surrounding lands hidden in the shadows of the volcano.

Due to the treacherous nature of such an active mountain, parts of the town below remain totally deserted in the red zone - with no one allowed to enter without permission.

However, Keow still managed to capture the haunting nature of this feared location with his incredible photographs.

Keow, 28, from Malaysia said: “I visited this ghost town below Mount Sinabung - it was all empty.

“The town is kind of scary - back in 2014, more than 10,000 people were evacuated.

“A lot of reporters have covered the volcano erupting, but none have shown the dead town.”

Keow trekked through the unknown wilderness with his wife, Marta Keow - and they were both amazed at what they saw.

Mount Sinabung is one of around 129 active volcanoes in Indonesia that all sit on the Pacific Ring of Fire - a belt of seismic activity running around the basin of the Pacific Ocean.

In May last year, seven people were killed in one of Sinabung’s eruptions and in February 2014, 16 people died.

At the time Keow was on site in April, the mountain was blowing hot gas clouds far into the sky.

Keow said: “When I entered some of the buildings, I found old photos of families who lived in the village before.

“I found bags and personal belongings - people must have evacuated fast without time to pack up their things.

“This town is now inside the red zone and no one is allowed to enter this zone without permission.”
