But now thanks to video-sharing sites like YouTube, beleaguered families can upload their offspring's outrageous antics to be enjoyed by millions.
With videos of babies, laughing, crying and misbehaving racking up staggering amounts of hits, parents are capturing and sharing footage of their tearaway children like never before.
To capitalise on this popularity, Discovery Family’s new show Babies Behaving Badly will showcase the most captivating, cheeky and hilarious child behaviour on the internet.
From monstrous meltdowns to adorable accidents, the show will join mummy’s boys and daddy’s girls in their most mischievous moments.
Hilarious smartphone footage reveals the highs, the lows, and unbelievable moments of parenthood from genius negotiations to trashing the house.
The stars of the show include the industrious Halpin children who decided to delight their mother by painting the toilet, and cheeky John Boarman who was caught with his hand in the sprinkle jar - but insists on his innocence.
The action of the mini-cast is intercut with reactions and mimicry from a team of five comedians.
Ty Barnett, Lynne Koplitz, Johanna Stein, Stephanie Blum and Joe Larson react to the shocking antics of the world’s most badly behaved babies.
Series executive Julian Thomas said: “Babies Behaving Badly is Barcroft Production's first foray into comedy and exposes the hilarious realities of parenthood.
“Combining standout clips with a returning cast of fresh comedians, we reveal a fascinating insight into the characteristics of our kids and their behaviour, sometimes outrageous, sometimes just downright funny."
Sarah Davies, VP of production & development at Discovery Family, said: "Babies Behaving Badly is the kind of show that will make your evening better – it's joyful and speaks to every single one of us.
“It’s a series I am hugely proud of because it elevates the humble, funny user generated clip into true comedy, and the clips are a testament to the army of parents out there who happen to have their cell on, at just the right moment.
“It’s a gift of a series – funny, witty, knowing and doesn’t take itself at all seriously – plus it was a pleasure to make and I think we have found some wonderful new comedic talent.”
Babies Behaving Badly, from this Friday at 8pm on the Discovery Family Channel
