Rebecca captured the wailing winds on camera after barricading herself, her farmer husband and three children inside as the temperature dropped to -8C and the storm worsened

Winds of 93mph and heavy snowfall battered the farmhouse where Rebecca Ostenfeld lives, in Dalasýsla, on the west of the island.

With winds howling outside, the 35-year-old opened her front door to take a look – and was hit with a blizzard of wind and snow.

The conditions were so extreme she said it was difficult to make out her surroundings - and her clothes were soaked with snow after just a few moments outside.

It also posed a serious danger to the farm’s 500 sheep and 18 Icelandic horses

The gales, which were part of the weather ‘bomb’ that hit the UK over the weekend, were so strong it caused sixteen cars to run off the roads in the southwest of the country and closed schools in Budardalur, the local town.

As the family slept overnight the snowstorm shook the roof, crashed through windows in the garage and filled it with snow. It also posed a serious danger to the farm’s 500 sheep and 18 Icelandic horses.

She said: “The storm started on December 9. It was very windy all night. I woke up many times just to look at the children and to look out to see if the stable was still there, but I couldn’t see anything.

“Our house was shaking and we could see the windows moving in and out. We could hear the roof moving and shaking.

“Our house is made of wood and is a bit old so it can be a bit scary, but we are used to it. All five of us were in the house and we just hoped the roof would not fly away.
“We have a lot of wind in Iceland but this was really crazy weather.

“When there is a lot of wind there is lots of snow everywhere. It looks so crazy
and you cannot see anything and you cannot walk easily - you fly and fall.”

Luckily, none of the children or farm animals were hurt during the freak weather – but the garage and stables were severely damaged.
