Welcome To The Danger Zone: Daredevil Snowboards Down An Erupting Volcano

Malaysian photographer Keow Wee Loong first visited Mount Bromo in East Java, Indonesia, in 2015 - where he came up with the daring plan.

The active volcano has been erupting since December 2015 and is currently a 'No Enter, Danger Zone' with an Level 3 alert warning - only one short of the highest level.

The 27-year-old said: “I visited Bromo last year and I thought it would be a great idea to get pictures and video of myself snowboarding down an erupting volcano.

"When I was there I thought to myself that it would be fairly possible to do.”

At 2,329 metres high, Mount Bromo is one of the most visited tourist attractions in East Java and belongs to the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park.

The fearless snapper camped beside the volcano for nine nights in February 2016 with fellow thrill-seekers Chin Khan Khan and Alvin Tung, who helped to capture his incredible feat.

Although the expedition itself was mostly a thrilling experience, Keow who is also an ambassador for Johnnie Walker in Malaysia, said: “I felt mixed emotions of excitement and fear throughout the two days.

"Camping below the volcano was difficult and I came down with a fever and a flu. But being one of the first people in the world to snowboard down this erupting volcano kept me excited.

“We woke up each morning at 3.30am to sneak into the grounds, this meant it was dark and I would have less of a chance of being caught.

"We just had to wait for the right moment to pull our stunt."

Unfortunately the adventurer and his two accomplices were caught twice by security - who deleted their images and footage each time.

“I was spotted on the first day of our trip and also on the very last day and had a lot of my footage deleted. No visitor has been allowed to enter the danger zone since December 2015,” Keow added.

“Avoiding the patrol at Mount Bromo was difficult, we had to hide our camp behind a tree."

The thrill-seeker was also severely burnt during his time on Mount Bromo due to the extremely high temperatures around the volcano.

He said: “The hardest part of this was not actually snowboarding down Mount Bromo but the temperature itself.

"On top of the volcano it is really hot when the volcanic ash is bursting out from the crater. As a result of this I have some serious burns on my skin now.

“It was also really cold at night with extremely strong winds, thick sulphuric ashes with sand particles blowing everywhere.

"We could feel the ground movement below Mount Bromo every half an hour."

Keow Wee Loong has also embarked on other near-impossible challenges such as scaling some of the world’s tallest skyscrapers in Hong Kong and Dubai.

The adrenaline junkie even has his own motto which he often shares when encouraging others to step out of their comfort zone: “Be the first person to do something that has not been done by others, put your dream in motion and let joy take you further”.
