Not On My Turf! Warthog Scares Baby Elephant Away From Watering Hole

The unusual scenes were spotted in March in Addo Elephant National Park in South Africa.

Conrad Cramer, a 42-year-old photographic guide, was observing the herd of elephant on a hot day by a small watering hole.

One five-year-old baby elephant was particularly enjoying the mud and cool water – but didn’t count on a rude intruder disrupting the peace.

Conrad said: “It was clear that he had his mind set on the mud wallow to cool himself down. 

"At his first approach the young elephant closest to the mud wallow kicked mud up at him and trumpeted loudly chasing the warthog off.

“But the pig turned around and slowly approached the young elephant indignantly, coming to face him head on.

"To my surprise the warthog stood his ground, and then to my disbelief, he lunged forward hooking with his tusks toward the elephant.”

Shocked, the young elephant quickly returned to the safety of its herd and left the warthog the ruler of the watering hole.

Conrad added: “To say that the elephants nose was put of joint is an understatement. His pride was most definitely bruised.”
