But hungry punters will have to Caerphilly plan their expedition to the exclusive Serendipity 3 in New York City – as the sandwich needs to be ordered 48 hours in advance.
For the grate-ing price tag cheese lovers receive a 24-carat gold edged grilled cheese sandwich with lobster bisque served in a baccarat crystal glass.
But it gets Feta - the bread is baked using Dom Perignon Champagne and brushed with truffle oil that contains flecks of edible gold.
It is then layered with grass-fed white truffle butter before slices of the extremely rare Caciocavallo Podolico cheese – which is aged in caves - are added.
However, it appears some people couldn’t give Edam about the expensive sandwich. Elizabeth McCormick, from Wilmington, Delaware, said: “It’s really nice but I’ve got children to put through college so I don’t think I’d eat them regularly.
“It’s pretty incredible that any sandwich – particularly a cheese sandwich - could cost so much money.”
The cheese is made in Southern Italy from the milk of the Podolica cow, which feed on fennel, liquorice, juniper and wild strawberries.
Once it’s fully prepared the sandwich is placed into a Panini maker and cut into triangles before being edged in the edible gold.
Chef and creator Joe Calderone at the exclusive Serendipity 3, said: “We wanted to create the world’s most expensive sandwich and decided to make it a grilled cheese – because that is the quintessential sandwich.
“We don’t sell an awful lot of these sandwiches but people are never disappointed when they order one.
“The flavors are extremely rich but it is satisfying.
“I truly believe that people have Gouda try this sandwich.”
The famous Serendipity 3 restaurant in New York City’s Upper East Side has served some of the world’s biggest stars over its 60-year history from Marilyn Monroe and Grace Kelly to Beyonce and Jay Z.
